New beginnings in a post pandemic era
Online 14-15 April 2021
Welcome to Nordic BIM Summit 2021
One of the largest BIM events in Europe within building and infrastructure
The theme "New beginnings in a post pandemic era", is all about unleashing the potential of digitalisation while having an emphasis on the necessary. What have we learned during 2020, what will we bring with us to the new normal, how can we make use of software and technologies to ensure focus on our assignments as architects, engineers or designers?
We invite you to two inspiring days with a lot of interaction, innovation and sharing of best practises where we look forward to welcome new beginnings!
Do you have any questions, please contact us!
Note that this is not the registration form for the event!
We invite you to two inspiring days with a lot of interesting keynote speakers, interaction, innovation and sharing of best practises.
This schedule could be subject to change. All times are CET
Day 1
- The total impact of the pandemic is yet to be seen. However, we can already now see signs on new requirements on housing, offices, public buildings (schools, hospitals). We are looking for more space at home for work and studies, people who can will most probably continue to work from home. Offices and schools will need to consider how to increase distance between workspaces, meeting rooms and areas for socialisation.
- Now we see projects starting to realize that were planned prior to the pandemic, will that change how they are being concluded and what will that mean in practice?
- How will our cities develop? Will urbanization slow down and what will smart cities mean in a post pandemic era?
About Lena
PhD Lena Lid Falkman is a researcher focusing on leadership and communication. The last ten years she has focused on how digitization changes how we work, co-work, lead and live. She just came out with a chapter in the book “Sweden through the crisis” on how our work-life and work-places change due to the covid pandemic. Lid Falkman is an associate at Stockholm School of Economics and is senior lecturer in work-life science at Karlstad University. She has spend much time abroad, for example as an associate at Florida State University. Her research has been prize awarded in both the US and Europe.
- Our keynote speaker will interact with the panel on a couple of perspectives; how agile can you be in a project adapting to a new normal, how will/ can legislation speed up with new requirements meeting the demands on new safety measures, urbanization – what will happen, will more people move to smaller cities or is this just a temporary trend?

- Our industry has a unique opportunity to impact the environment for real. As an industry we can also impact from different perspectives, i.e. when sourcing materials, how to optimize supply chains and by reducing waste and at the same time lower carbon footprint. On site how to improve safety and working environment are also critical factors.
- The demands on sustainability are also clear both from customers and regulators. However, there are questions raised if the public is prepared to pay the price.
- What can be learned from companies that have made investments by creating organisations focusing on sustainability?

As we might begin to see the end of the pandemic, we will have to ask us what this will mean. How will we live, work, and spend our leisure time – the answers to these questions will unfold in the years to come. What we can say however, is that the way we communicate and travel in our professional life will change. According to the Stockholm Hotel Report 2020, hotel guests in 2019 was made up of about 50% business travellers, a group of travellers that completely disappeared after February 2020. What if this group never comes back? In this session, we will investigate how our cities can use the new beginning in a post pandemic world to focus less on global travellers, and more on the changing needs and wishes of the local citizen.
Join in for some discussions before the end of the event.

New beginnings in a post pandemic era
In December of 2019, the world paused.A global pandemic erupted with an intensity unseen in modern times. As the sum of its effects are yet to be seen, we are now experiencing an evolutionary pivot unfolding in real time. Urgent; yes. Interesting; more than so. While digitalization continues to unleash new horizons to how we think, interact and create the new – the pandemic has put an emphasis on the necessary. From now on, our approach to innovation comes with a much clearer agenda about what needs to be prioritized and why. For those at the forefront of progress, the challenges have never been bigger. Or more exciting. Given the choice to steer towards a more sustainable future, societies will now need to evolve in more transparent ways. One where technology is used for the great of the many, rather than the empowerment of the few. Where businesses are able to develop and grow, not in spite of but because of global trials.
During Nordic BIM Summit we will together with our keynote speakers address and discuss these interesting topics from different point of views!

BIM – the route towards a sustainable society
We have set our climate goals. What we need now is action and to deliver towards these goals. BIM is an excellent tool for creating a complete solution over time to facilitate everything from sustainable construction to demolition and recycling.
That is the view of Mattias Goldmann who has been Head of Sustainability at Sweco for over a year and previously ran organisations that worked for tougher climate goals. He will be one of the keynote speakers at Symetri’s Nordic BIM Summit 2021.

“After working a long time for tougher climate goals, I wanted to contribute by turning words into action. As Head of Sustainability for Europe’s largest engineering and architecture consulting firm, I have opportunities to influence the actual transition and steer it towards more climate-smart solutions that are sustainable over time,” says Mattias.
He goes on to explain that joining the built society sector was a conscious decision and not by chance.
“In the transport sector, the strategies are reasonably clear with investments in electric vehicles under way, but in building and construction, there’s much left to do before we reach real sustainability.”
The BIM tool – an important collection hub
One learning from working for years in the climate movement is to acknowledge the importance of choosing the correct material to create a sustainable solution.
“Choosing the right materials is important for the whole lifecycle of a building. When we build, we need to know that the materials we choose are sustainable, all the way from production to recycling. When we know what materials are where in a building during repairs and renovations, we can create an efficient, profitable and climate-smart circular construction process. Then we also avoid being dependent on raw materials from other parts of the world – our buildings become the material bank we need!”
The BIM tool creates these opportunities by being both an efficient planning tool and a collaborative platform between all the different actors that are needed during construction.
“Not everyone has yet realised the great societal benefit BIM offers. Too many are still focusing on the technical solutions. I wish we could all pause from our computers and focus more on the full picture around a construction process. Then we would realise the advantages from using BIM in creating the conditions needed to meet the sustainability challenges the construction industry is facing at every stage.”
Mattias Goldmann continues to explain that as the world’s expectations on the construction industry are changing with increasing demands for transparency and contributions to a circular economy, BIM becomes a central tool to meet all challenges.
“The important thing is to get more people to understand the importance of using all the advantages it offers and not staring blindly at the technical aspects. BIM is useful not only for a specific construction site but also for the whole of Sweden as a construction site.”
Want to get away from guilt and shame
Mattias Goldmann also reacts to the climate issue often being linked to guilt and shame, with people being made to feel guilty about things they don’t do right.
“I think that’s one of the reasons we haven’t got further with the climate issue. We have blamed instead of focusing on all the gains made at virtually all the stages of more sustainable construction. Sustainable solutions are also economically sustainable. The longer the parts last, the less investment will be required in the future.”
Mattias Goldmann believes and hopes that we are now on the verge of a major breakthrough in the field of climate change.
“Three factors together can contribute to that: one that the demands of the outside world are now changing quickly, two that we realise that many raw materials are running out and three that the pandemic stop has given us a psychological insight that new ways of thinking are possible, which means that many world leaders are talking about creating something better after the stop, ‘Build back better’ as President Biden says.”
Embody the change you want to see
At the Nordic BIM Summit, Mattias will also point to opportunities of jumping on the climate bandwagon early on.
“If you join early and are at the forefront, there are many gains to be made. If you wait until the last call, the changeover will involve only costs. There are now also record opportunities to get part-financing to change – and those funds will of course not be there for those who are the last to change.”
A sign that things are really about to happen in climate work and the construction industry is that a very large number of participants have registered for the Nordic BIM Summit 2021, while many other conferences that focus mostly on the problems themselves surrounding the climate are attracting ever fewer participants.”
“I think a lot of people are beginning to realise that it’s time to turn words into actions. They are therefore looking for platforms and events that can provide the tools they need to start delivering on all the good climate goals we have decided on” says Mattias Goldmann.
Want to contribute to solving the environmental challenges we face
Symetri, which is arranging the Nordic BIM Summit, has noticed a strong willingness in the construction and property industry to help solve the environmental challenges we face.
“At the same time, there is a need for clearer requirements for procurement. We all need to take the lead with new construction methods so we reach the goals faster. We have listened to our customers who have clearly said that sustainability is an important and hot topic, and that’s why it is a main focus of this year’s Nordic BIM Summit,” explains Per Carlsson, Director Building & Infrastructure at Symetri.
